In Line with State Efforts: Benha University Implements 12 Measures to Rationalize Electricity Consumption

Dr. Nasser El-Gizawy, President of Benha University, announced that the university has adopted a comprehensive plan to reduce electricity consumption across all its facilities and affiliated units. This initiative aligns with the Egyptian state’s efforts to promote energy efficiency and responds to global climate changes, as well as challenges affecting supply chains and fuel prices.

The plan includes 12 key measures as follows:

  1. Switching off high-consumption lighting in buildings and facilities and maximizing the use of natural daylight during morning hours.
  2. Inspecting all electrical systems across the university to ensure safety and compliance with operational standards, reducing energy waste.
  3. Developing a plan to transition to solar water heaters in university dormitories, hospitals, and laboratories.
  4. Adhering to the Egyptian energy efficiency code when constructing new facilities in the future.
  5. Reducing lighting levels in roads and entrances across the campus by 50%.
  6. Operating air conditioning systems in summer at 26°C, except in rooms requiring lower temperatures due to scientific or medical equipment.
  7. Launching awareness campaigns across faculties and administrative units on the importance of energy conservation.
  8. Using energy-efficient lighting (LED) in university buildings and facilities.
  9. Implementing solar-powered lighting for campus fences and green areas.
  10. Forming a committee comprising members of the Engineering Administration and professors from the Faculties of Engineering (Shoubra and Benha) to monitor electricity consumption.
  11. Ensuring that electricity is switched off in all facilities after official working hours.
  12. Expanding the number of solar-powered units across the university.

This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to sustainability, efficient resource management, and environmental responsibility.

Dr. Nasser El-Gizawy, President of Benha University, has announced the suspension of in-person classes across all faculties on Wednesday and Thursday, with teaching to continue online due to unfavorable weather conditions.

The decision comes in light of forecasts indicating unstable weather, as reported by the Egyptian Meteorological Authority. Dr. El-Gizawy noted that the measure aims to ensure the safety of students and staff while maintaining the continuity of the educational process through online platforms.

He added that the decision excludes medical teams, university security personnel, staff of university dormitories, occupational health and safety departments, on-duty teams, and others whose roles require their physical presence to ensure the effective management of operations within the university and its faculties.
